Moisture Reduction Technology
The new Dry-Tech MRT fly box uses Moisture Reduction Technology (MRT) to eliminate harmful moisture that causes hooks to rust and fly-tying materials to weaken. Moisture from wet flies that would generally accumulate inside the box is now soaked up continuously by unique absorbent crystals. These crystals are stored in a removable container recessed into the lid of the box. Wet flies placed back in the box will dry out completely as the moisture from them is drawn out of the box and away from other flies as well. This patent pending moisture reduction design maintains a regulated dry climate inside and extends the durability and lifespan of hooks and tying materials. Larger water retaining flies also benefit completely from the MRT design.
MRT Crystals
MRT crystals are specialized desiccant beads that absorb moisture and work most efficiently when different sized beads are used in combination. These beads store water in a non-liquid form and as a result, water cannot be spilled inside the box. The crystals are orange in color when they are fresh, and gradually turn a medium green color when they begin to reach their maximum absorption capacity. At this point they have reached 70% of their capacity and will still be effective for another 2 "individual fishing days". After this additional time, they will turn emerald green in color. At that time they can be easily regenerated in a conventional microwave oven in order to release the moisture that they have absorbed. After being refreshed, their absorption potential and original color are restored. This regeneration process can be repeated for long term service.
Regeneration Instructions
Regeneration can be performed at any time before the crystals reach their exhausted stage.
To remove the container from the foam, use your fingertips or insert a small flat metal object to pry the container up from the foam.
Place the MRT container onto a revolving microwave oven turntable and heat for 20 seconds on a normal power setting. Let the container cool for 45 seconds
, turn it upside down and repeat another 20 second heating cycle. The container will be hot as steam is being released, so using a glove is advised when moving it. In general, between 2-3 cycles will be required for the crystals to revert back to their orange color, but this may vary based upon microwave settings and models. After the last heating cycle, remove it from the oven and allow the container to cool to room temperature before replacing it back into the box. Reusable backup MRT containers can be transported in their original zip lock pouch or any airtight plastic bag.
Humidity Indicator Test Strips
A Humidity Indicator Test Strip is included with every box in order to demonstrate the effects of the Moisture Reduction Technology design. For a simple test using a new box and just a few wet flies, please click on Consumer Test
Helpful Hints
- Try to avoid having liquid water come into direct contact with the crystals. If this occurs, the affected area will turn greenish/black immediately and lose its ability to absorb moisture until it is regenerated again. When refreshed, its absorption capability will be restored however, the crystals that came into direct contact with the water may fragment. The unaffected crystals will still function normally even if this occurs.
- When not in use, keep your fly box closed to eliminate the crystals from unnecessarily absorbing humidity outside the box. This would be more significant in high humidity climates. The airtight box maintains a regulated low humidity level when the box is closed.
- Visually inspect the O-Ring Seal occasionally for debris in order to maintain an airtight seal.
